What is Involved in Completing CNA Program in New Mexico?

Becoming a nurse aide is one of the most popular choices among the allied health care careers. In fact, this job is one of the most in-demand careers in the nation due to the overwhelming  number of elderly people choosing to live an independent lifestyle in retirement communities.

One reason this career choice is so popular is that earning CNA certification in New Mexico can be achieved within a few short weeks. Another is the high level of personal satisfaction that many people receive from helping others live a more satisfying life.

Enrollment and Completion of CNA Classes in New Mexico

Step 1:

Find an approved program in your state: Find a CNA Training Program

To become a CNA in New Mexico, you need to enroll in an accredited institution that offers CNA training. Only programs that meet specific criteria concerning the number of hours you need to be in classes will qualify you to take the state issued licensing exam.

Your CNA classes should offer you no less than 75 hours of training in a classroom setting and a minimum of 16 hours of hands-on experience within a medical setting.

Step 2:

To enroll in CNA training programs in New Mexico, there are a few prerequisites that you should be prepared for.

You generally need to be 18 years old, with a high school diploma. If you are currently in high school and enrolled in a CNA program within your school, there are exceptions when it comes time to take the test.

Because of the nature of working in a medical environment, be prepared to undergo a full background check, mental evaluation, and physical check up before enrolling. Make sure to take a look at our information concerning how to qualify for free CNA training or secure funding for your education.

Step 3:

Complete the CNA training program.

Your CNA training courses will cover the paperwork aspects of nursing like taking, recording, and documenting patient status reports; knowing what rights the patient has; and learning the language of the medical field. When you train actively, you will learn CPR and how to assist a patient with his or her daily grooming, such as changing their clothes. You will also learn how to change patients’ bedding. Learning how to handle emergencies is also a requirement.

        Step 1:

At the completion of the CNA course, you will need to register to take the New Jersey exam, which is administered by Prometric.

You should start by contacting them via internet or phone and applying with your course credentials and proper identification along with fees of $95.00 to test. They will send you an authorization to test within a few days and let you know where and at what time.

        Step 2:

Prepare to take the certification exam by reviewing what you learned in your CNA training classes and taking practice tests.

        Step 3:

Take the certification exam. It is a good idea to bring two forms of ID with you, and arrive at the testing site early to check in.

The first section of the two part exam that you will take is the clinical skills portion. During this portion, you will be asked to perform five nurse aide skills that you learned during your hands-on training. You need to get a minimum score of 80 percent to be allowed to take the written part of the test.

The written test is two hours long and contains multiple-choice questions based on what you learned in your training program. Results are immediately calculated, and  if you pass both portions, Prometric will send you your certification document in the mail. Your certification achievement will be listed on the New Mexico Nurse Aide Registry automatically, and you can begin work anytime you are ready.

        Step 4:

You should create a resume after passing the exam. A powerful resume listing your qualifications is an essential part of finding work as a CNA.

The Department of Workforce in New Mexico lists the annual CNA Salary in the state as $22,580 on average, and drastic increases in the number of CNA jobs is predicted over the next decade.

You can also expand your career horizons by taking RN or LPN courses, which will qualify you for more job opportunities and a higher salary.
