CNA Certification in Rhode Island

Posted by | September 29, 2010 | CNA Certification Registries

The road to CNA certification in Rhode Island starts with taking classes that are approved and governed by the Rhode Island Department of Health. These course must be completed in no more than 90 days, but are generally completed in a shorter amount of time between 6-8 weeks. After completing the course with passing results, the next step would be to take a state issued nursing assistant competency exam.

Many nurse assistants move on from this position to more advanced careers in nursing and other medical related positions causing a high turnover in this field and a lack of qualified applicants to fill the spaces. This is exciting for the prospective Nurse Assistant as it creates job security as well as the opportunity for advancements within the nursing field.

CNA training in Rhode Island requires that you submit to a background criminal check and health exam. If both checks come back clean, you can then enroll in an approved program that is commonly provided by nursing homes, hospitals, and independent training schools. Candidates for nurse aide programs will also need to be at least 18 years old and have completed high school or earned a GED certificate. Find a school or Program that fits your needs.

It is possible to have all tuition fees covered for you if you meet federal requirements of being employed at least 12 months before or after completing your course. You can get a list of approved programs from the Rhode Island Department of Health, and you can find more information in our article concerning free CNA training.

The course itself will prepare you for the state exam and will include a state and federal requirement of no less than 100 hours of studies. Twenty of these hours will be focused on active clinical skills within a medical setting, while the remaining hours will be spent in the classroom. You will learn how to efficiently perform many basic nurse assistant tasks involving patient communications, rights and needs. Other important courses will include CPR certification, monitoring and documenting vitals, infection control, and how to handle emergency situations such as a patient enduring a life threatening stroke or heart attack.

The Rhode Island State Nurse Assistant Exam is typically conducted at the center where you received your training, and costs $55 for the exam and there is also a $40 registration fee. The test will be composed of both a written portion and a demonstrative skills portion. During skill demonstration, you will have to successfully perform 5 nurse assistant skills which you learned during training. The skills you must perform will be randomly chosen by your Nurse Assistant Evaluator but, will almost always include proper hand washing as one.

The written portion will contain at least 50 multiple choice questions. If both portions of the examination are completed with passing accuracy, you can apply to get your Certification of Registration as a Nursing Assistant through the registry. With all the necessary requirements, you will be listed on the Rhode Island Nurse Assistant Registry.
