CNA Certification in Ohio
In order to increase the standards in long term care facilities and create a basis for better training programs for the nurse aides who work there, Congress added the Nursing Home Reform Act to the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of ‘87 (OBRA ‘87). Every state must be in accordance with these laws. The law states that there is a certain outline that must be followed for any nurse aide training program so that the nurse aide gets the correct knowledge and skills they need to meet a certain standard of quality. In the state of Ohio, the OBRA regulated nurse aide training program is overseen and approved by the Ohio Department of Health.
This approved CNA training in Ohio must be completed before the nurse aide can proceed to the nurse aide competency test, be considered state tested and be placed on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry as a State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA). It can be highly rewarding to work as a certified nurse aide in a nursing home, while helping others and building upon skills needed to progress in your health care career.
The training program will have a federal requirement of training hours equal to 75 and will contain a mix between classroom learning and at least 16 clinical hours where you will be learning in a hands on setting under a licensed nurse. You will be required to have at least 16 hours in the classroom training before you go on to complete your clinical hours. Find a school or Program that fits your needs.
Basic curriculum for the CNA training in Ohio as outlined by OBRA ‘87 will cover general nurse aide skills like caring for patients, knowing their rights and how to protect them, dealing with emergencies, communication with patients and supervising nurse, spotting neglect or abuse, providing comfort to patients and overall cleanliness to keep infection under control. The training course will provide you with the skills you need to perform life saving techniques like CPR as well as give you the knowledge you need to pass the state test.
When you have completed the CNA classes, you will have to take the state test to continue on to receive CNA certification. The Ohio State Nurse Competency Test is conducted by D&S Diversified Technologies. You will need to preregister with a signed photo ID to take the test. Once you have registered, you will be given a date at which you will have to be physically present at least 20 minutes in advance to take the test.
The test has a written section of 79 questions and a skills section containing 5 parts. In order to pass the test, you have to score at least 80% on the written and the skills. You will be given Ninety minutes for the written and Thirty Five minutes for the skills. If you pass both sections, you will be put on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry as a State Tested Nurse Aide and your documents will be mailed to you within the same week of testing.
The current job growth for the CNA (STNA) in Ohio is foretold by the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services as being at 14%, also equivalent to around 1,800 available jobs a year. The median salary is said to be at $24,274 a year. These are some prospective numbers for the certified nurse aide in Ohio.
