CNA Careers
The world of the CNA career is fascinating and can be filled with the thrill of being able to help others in a fast paced, never dull environment. Currently, there is a great need for CNA’s or, certified nursing assistants all over the country due to a nationwide shortage of qualified nurses. It is a fairly simple process to become a CNA and requires only training through a state health department or nurse registry accredited training program plus passing a refresher course certification exam. Once you have done these things according to your specific state regulations, then you can be added to your state nurse aide register and work as a certified nurse aide.
When one wishes to enroll for the mandatory training course in order to be a CNA, they will have to apply through the school or medical facility in which they wish to attend. For enrollment, requirements will vary with each state however, federal law requires some specific entry requirements that must be met by every accredited program. The federal requirements include: FBI background check with clean criminal history through fingerprinting, physical/health exam and current immunizations. There is no law on age or education requirements to enroll in the program though, some schools will have a limit to attend their specific program which can be from 16 to 18 with a high school degree or equivalent. Classes must also be at least 75 course hours including 16 hands on training hours to meet federal law though, most states will require more.
CNA training programs will include common courses that are designed to train the nurse aide to be efficient in the medical field and patient care. They include learning how to change patient bedding, bathe patients, feed patients and overall care of patients as well as how to efficiently work under the supervision of a nurse. Courses will also include life saving technique classes such as CPR.
After the training courses are through, the nurse aide would need to pass a certification exam issued by their state of residence. The exams are typically given through third party sources like Red Cross. The 2 part exam includes a written and clinical skills test during which, the aide would have a time limit to complete both multiple choice questions and a physical demonstration test. The written test is graded by computer and the demonstration test is graded by an instructor. Grades are based on the percentage that are answered or performed correctly. If passing grades are received, the aide can then receive their certification documents and be added to the state registry.
The current median salary for the certified nurse aide in the United States is around $31,000 a year. The labor department also reports a great outlook for someone in this career position as it is expected to rise by 26% over the next 5 years.
Being a CNA – Can you Do it?
CNAs are often viewed as saints due to the work that they do. This is because a CNA does things that seem to be other worldly as they are helping patients and communities alike. CNAs are people who do the things that most people would not care to do, caring for our elderly population – people that are most forgotten due to the busy lifestyles we have become accustomed to in this hectic world.
The elderly people seem to get left behind in the hustle and bustle. This is where a CNA steps in and cares for them. They nourish them, comfort them and help them in their biggest time of need. This is the saddest part of the job because many times, their biggest time of need is when they are dying. Many of these elderly people have been abandoned by their loved ones and have no one left to care for them. The CNA essentially has to fill in for mothers, fathers, daughters and sons. They are literally, the last person these elders will know and respect. It is very emotional and takes a very mentally strong person to do these things.
Additionally, there are the other aspects of the job. The physical aspects of the job require a CNA to be able to lift patients from the bed and other areas. There are also very long and stressful hours. Sometimes CNAs work 12-16 hour shifts at a time when filling in for other staff. Some CNAs even find it hard to deal with the basic care of a patient when they have to handle urine and other bodily fluids as part of the job.
Though these CNA tasks seem difficult, there is always something at the end of the day that brings these nursing assistants back again and again. Perhaps it is the emotional connections, life long companions or the rewarding feeling of knowing they are doing something great. Perhaps they just enjoy the competitive pay and job security. Either way, the questions would still stand for you. Can you do it? Can you handle being a CNA?

How to attain a CNA Certification
CNA Certification—How to Attain it and What It Can Be Used for
Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) are also called nursing aides. Registered nurses and other top medical staff directly supervise CNAs. CNAs respond to calls from patients needing assistance. CNAs will help with feeding, stripping down bedding, and helping patients with bathing and dressing. CNAs are trained to take vital signs, and deliver specimens. CNAs must observe the patient’s moods and mental conditions and give feedback to nursing staff. CNAs have a significant amount of contact with the patient, more so than other medical staff members do. CNAs can find jobs in hospitals, nursing care agencies, physician’s offices, and outpatient clinic.
CNAs can work 40-hour weeks or more because of the demand for 24-hour patient care. However, part-time schedules are also frequent because of the available hours. CNAs have a demanding job and find themselves on their feet for majority of their shift. CNAs must protect against injury and potential threat of getting airborne diseases. The responsibilities of a CNA may include unpopular tasks such as, removing soiled bedding and emptying bedpans. However, many task are rewarding, such as seeing a patient’s progress based on your care.
Most states require some training to become a CNA and can require up to 85 hours of training — after which, certification must be obtained. Obtain information for your states requirements via your state’s nurse’s registry or the department of health in your state may offer this information. Many
CNAs get their training in high school. Technical and vocational schools also offer a CNA program along with nursing facilities and the Red Cross. Courses in a CNA program may include anatomy and physiology, interpersonal skills, communication skills, patient rights and independence, infection control, and other basic nursing skills.
Median hourly wage in the United Stated for a CNA is approximately $11, however, that figure can change based on experience and region. The demand for CNAs is enormous. This is a great time to enter the health care field. If you are looking for job security and want to get your feet wet in the health care industry, CNA training my just be the avenue for you. This is one field that when they say ‘no experience necessary’ they mean it. There are however a few requirements that much be met before entering into an accredited program. All states require that you be at least 18 years of age. Depending on your state, a high school diploma or GED is also required.

Finding CNA work is not usually very difficult. There is often times quite a few facilities that are just chomping at the bit to hire experienced CNA”s. Sometimes directly after training, a CNA student may have a difficult time finding his or her first job due to lack of experience. But that is usually not the case. There are of course a few things that can possibly improve the chance that you get hired. The faster you get hired the better, its best to get working while all of the training from your cna classes is fresh in your head.
One of the things you will need when hitting the pavement looking for CNA employment is a Resume. A good resume is so important when looking for a job as a professional. The resume is a tricky thing, on the one hand you don’t want to put to much and overload your interviewer, on the other hand you want to impress them. The trick to a good resume is simply fitting in as much detail as possible in a clear concise manner in as few words as possible. You want your employer to take a look at your resume and be able to see everything he or she wants to know within 30 seconds.
Some outlines of what exactly you should include in your resume are as follows:
- Mission Statement and Career Goals
- Your Skills
- Education
- Work History
- References
Remember that what will really draw your employer in is how you present yourself on that little piece of paper. You want it to look extremely clean and orderly. All categories should be separated and spaced perfectly. There are many different resume templates that are available on the internet that can help you compose your own style.
One thing you can do that I have found always works is buying an extra thick sheet of paper, a piece of paper that costs about 50 cents but shows that you go above and beyond the call of duty. Little things like that always set you aside from the competition.
You will definitely want to dress to impress. I personally don’t believe there is such a thing as overdressing for an interview. If your interviewer looks into the room and thinks you look the most professional, that your appearance outshines the others, it speaks wonders about your character without you even opening your mouth.
Now as for your interview do your best to study before the interview. You don’t want to mess up and stumble on some silly interview question that you know that you know!! Go in with your training fresh in your mind so that you can exude confidence.
Lastly, simply believe in yourself, you have made it this far, and what it took for you get here was no easy road. You worked hard to earn your cna certification, go out and enjoy it.
Free CNA Training Possibilities
I get asked all the time if I know how folks can find free cna training in their area. This is a great topic because a lot of people are confused when it comes to this concept. First off nothing in this world is necessarily free. Every school that offers CNA training classes is going to want to get paid for the cost of teaching you to be A CNA. It can be quite expensive to train a group of CNA students. There are costs such as CNA instructors, CPR training, Materials such as books, stethoscope, scrubs and clinical training costs. So there is really no way the school is going to be able to afford to give you the proper training for free. However their are ways that you can get the schooling paid for by certain government agencies.
I have had multiple students who were financially unable to attend CNA Training. How we were able to, in essence get them Free CNA Training, was by contacting local government agencies.
Unemployment is one of the most sure fire ways to get your education funded. If you are unemployed the United States is interested in getting you back in the job market. They offer educational funding, and they will pay you unemployment while you attend the cna classes. I have seen countless students get their entire cna training program for free, and they were paid unemployment while doing it .
Another option is receiving financial aid from the government. There are many accredited educational centers in every state that are government funded programs. The vast majority of community colleges in the United States offer CNA training classes, and all community colleges have financial aid programs through the federal government. If you make less than $25,000 dollars a year, if you have children, or if your a veteran, you have a very good chance of having your entire CNA education paid for and they often times will even give you a grant to help you through the semester.
The last way to get funded for your CNA training is by calling local healthcare facilities such as hospitals, elderly care facilities, and even the CNA Training programs and inquiring if anyone knows of local funding or internships that will sponsor a CNA student. This can be much more difficult then the latter two options, but it can be done and it never hurts to try.
Even if you cannot get the cna classes paid in full you may be able to at least get help. If you still aren’t able to find funding then you may have to pay for the schooling yourself. The programs are sometimes a little bit expensive, but you will be leaving with a career skill set that you will always have. CNA’s for the most part have no problem finding jobs, there is a lot of stability in this line of work and it can be yours.
Is CNA Training Online Right For You?
It is in fact very convenient to be able to stay at home and do all of your class work on the computer. In a lot of ways CNA Training Online makes sense because it allows the student to go at his or her own pace. While some students are able to soak up everything in a lecture, many students find that they need to have the information repeated a few times before they are comfortable with it. In the CNA Training Online setting, most instructors will have various CNA training modules and videos that the student can simply watch over and over again until they are comfortable with the material. This is definitely a perk to Online course work.
Another wonderful characteristic of Online CNA Courses are that they are extremely convenient for an adult student. Often times students that are taking the CNA classes are adults that don’t have a lot of time for their education. Many students have families and responsibilities that do not allow them to come to school at scheduled times and take classses. Online CNA training gives folks an option when deciding if they are going to be able to attend a CNA program.
Now there are some negatives when it comes to online cna training. One negative is that you are not going to be under the direct guidance of an instructor throughout the entire course. It can be much more difficult to ask questions or get feedback from your instructor through email then it is in the classroom setting. If you feel as though you need more close guidance, or that you simply cannot follow the curriculum well without a guiding hand, then online training might not be for you.
Lastly, and this is very important, even though the course may be online it will have to have a skills portion of the course that will not be done online. In most CNA Programs you will be required to have skills training and clinical training at a chosen facility. All CNA Certification bodies in the United States require a certain curriculum in order for the candidate to be certified. The Curriculums ALWAYS require skills check offs and clinical time. Do not let any schools take advantage of you by not offering these key parts of your training. If you have any questions regarding what the school is offering as a curriculum call your local CNA Certification Registry for more information.

If you are looking to get into in home care or an elderly care facility the pay is usually going to be around $12.00 to $14.00/hour. Benefits can also be included but very well may not be. This may be something you will have to ask your hiring employer.
